Advantages of the Powerglide 46 Catamaran

Initial cost The Powerglide 46 is many times cheaper to purchase than the aluminium
counterparts. Our hull is moulded in a one piece mould so building time, and
cost, is drastically reduced. Whilst strength is increased. Initial investment can
be drastically reduced, and an ongoing saving of 210,000 litres of fuel
each year in fuel cost. Generally speaking, the fuel saving will pay for the cost of
the Catamaran in one year! Add to this the extra days that you can work and it
works out at a surprisingly economical package.
Running cost
Our wind farm cats run at an average of 47lts to 56 lts fuel per hour (total) so this can be
many times cheaper than any other wind farm Cat. In some cases the
Powerglide 46 has used over 2700lts /DAY LESS fuel than other cats for
EXACTLY the same work. Quite a considerable saving! 810,000 litres Less per year
Even smaller catamarans are using over three to four times the amount of fuel used by
the Powerglide 46. At Walney Wind Farm the Powerglide 46 was this much cheaper to
run in one year, than an Aluminium Catamaran doing the same job!
It is big money which ever way you look at it. (This is just one Boat)
Boat size.
Whilst it is normally true to say that the bigger the better when out at sea,
because of the shape of our catamaran hull design, our 14m cat can deliver and
recover Technicians from the Towers in harsher sea conditions than other
bigger, very much more expensive Catamarans with planing hulls, and at the
same time cover more ground due to it’s the higher speed.
In 2.5 m seas Terry Can hold the catamaran against the tower without any movement
at all using just 1500 rpm from the engines.
Sea keeping
Although the powerglide 46 is relatively small at 14m, it is coded for 12 pax
plus crew, and because of the hull configuration, can successfully work in the
sea conditions where other larger and more expensive Catamarans cannot.
Reliability
The Standard specification on the Powerglide 46 has been tried and tested on
all our catamarans and on our monohull craft before this, dating back to the late
seventies. Well over 870 boats. Mechanical breakdowns are almost unheard of.
If you need a Catamaran that works continually, straight out of the box, the
Powerglide 46 is this. The ‘Vanishing Point’ crew completed the first eight
month contract without a single missed day, straight from delivery.
Speed
The Powerglide 46 is capable of 30 knots and can maintain 21 to 25 knots in
most conditions. In suitable weather 30 knots is the fast cruise speed and can
cover a huge amount of ground in the shortest possible time. Load makes little
difference to the speed, it just seems to give a smoother ride.
Comfort at sea
Because the Powerglide 46 is a High Performance Displacement Catamaran
the hull form does not lend itself to the backbreaking “slams” that are
experienced with a planing hull form. The ride is always comfortable and
sprung seats are not a requirement on this Catamaran.
Strength
We manufacture our Catamarans to a Lloyds SSC standard and reinforce them
in access of this as well. The hull is almost entirely built from heavy duty
woven material and is extremely resistant to impact penetrations. More so than
an aluminium hull. Obviously our hulls do not suffer from the problems
		associated with welded seams.
Wind Farm Transfers
The Cat can deliver and recover technicians from the Tower without any rise
and fall at the bow. Other Cats, especially some bigger Catamarans are
suffering between a seven to eleven rung movement in the same conditions!
We do not require any special attachments on the bow to bring about a smooth
and safe transfer without movement at the tower.

License
The Powerglide 46 is Coded as an SCV for the 60 miles with up to 12 pax and
2 crew. (The same as most Wind Farm crew boat)

Disadvantages
At 14m, the Powerglide 46 Wind Farm Catamaran is capable of carrying cargo but
cannot carry a container on board. This is the job for a bigger craft. However, when
carrying maximum load the speed of the Powerglide 46 is virtually the same as when
light loaded. However, you could, in theory, have six boats to carry stores and
still use less fuel, and still save money on the initial purchase price!
