POWERGLIDE 46 Wind Farm Crew Boat
Go Green with the Powerglide46 .
It would seem that some people have gained the wrong impression regarding GRP boats in the way that they are difficult to reuse after their life is over compared to aluminium Catamarans
Now while I am not going to comment on any other type of craft other than our own Powerglide 46. Careful decisions have to be made to ensure that the correct choice is actually what it seems to be.
Our fuel savings are so great, that they overcome any other argument regarding reusability and recycling.
From Day one our wind farm crew boat will save in the order of 3000 litres of fuel each day when compared to an aluminium Planing Catamaran. This will add up to over 800,000 litres a year, and in ten years the saving will be 8,000,000 litres of fuel saved.
If you wanted to cut up and melt down your aluminium catamaran after ten years, you could never make a saving to the ecology this big.
Now imagine you had ten of these catamarans … 80,000,000 litres of fuel…in ten years……
This is going a very long way to help the environment. On top of that, of course, it cost you so much less to run. Less cost equals more profit .
However, our own Catamaran is built to give 30 years of service and within that time only mechanical parts will need to be replaced in normal maintenance.
So thirty years the saving will be 24,000,000 litres of fuel saved.
Yes, it is true that all GRP boats are more difficult to remove from the environment, they cannot simply be melted down and turned into another boat. They would have to be chewed up and ground down to dust. The dust can be used as a filler within industry.
This dust is harmless and cannot ever be compared to Asbestos dust which has carcinogenic properties.
But more usually, old GRP boats are sold off to go into another field of service that requires less performance, Fish Farming is one region where these older craft could be put to good use and still have many years of service. (our fist commercial boat, 1979 is still in use)
Any of the boats could be utilised by sending them to work in emerging countries in one form or another. In this respect, there is no additional cost in removing the boats from service.
